1 9 8 4 l e a t h e r is a leather goods company founded in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. We began our business in 1984 in the small workshop of a belt and shoe store owned by master craftsman Suleyman Baski. Today, the main artisan of our workshop is Yilmaz Anil Baski, who’s evolved the facility into a school and atelier where ancient techniques, modern touch, and creative designs merge.
Handmade. Biodegradable. Chemical-free.
Each of our products is a unique creation, with every stitch, every cut, and the entire dying process contributing to a 100% handmade item. We don't use any machinery when making our leather goods.
Vegetable tanning, or tanning with plant substances (such as tree bark), has existed for more than 5,000 years and was the main tanning method for many centuries. In more recent times, however, with the development of industrialized tanning methods, it’s estimated that only 5% of all leather is vegetable tanned.
At 1984 Leather, we care deeply about the environment – as well as about the well-being of our customers and craft workers – which is why we only work with premium vegetable-tanned full-grain leather (all of which is chromium and chemical free and biodegradable). All our leather is sourced from local villages.
Your vegetable-tanned leather product will age naturally and evolve over time to become a unique, cherished item, whether you purchase it for personal use or as a precious gift that will be remembered for years.
